Pop Up Pedestal

The Pop-Up Pedestal is a street theatre performance that explores the concept of statues in public spaces and social justice themes of representation, protest and gender equality.

The piece was inspired by the song ‘Pedestal’ (watch the video here) which I wrote for my touring production ‘Florence‘ and it questions who we commemorate in our public spaces and why. Who deserves a place on the pedestal and how should history be presented in our towns and streets, on our plaques and memorials?

Popping-up in the heart of communities, the pedestal challenges views of public space from within public space, inviting people to consider what’s around them and why it matters.

Since creating the pedestal based on Florence Nightingale I have had the opportunity to research other stories including Queen Mary I and a collaborative project called Hidden Histories looking at representation and inclusion.

The Pop-Up Pedestal was created with support using public funding from Arts Council England and I am grateful to acknowledge their support.
