Workshop 1 – for schools, parents, carers and families

These songwriting workshop videos were commissioned by Cambridgeshire County Council’s ‘The Library Presents …in your house‘.

Discover Florence Nightingale through songwriting: This video workshop is for parents, carers, families, teachers and young musicians. It outlines a five step songwriting challenge so that you can get creative at home whilst finding out about Florence. It was made possible by funding from ‘The Library Presents …in your house’.

You do not need to play an instrument, you do not need to read music and you do not need to have written a song before. Everyone can have a go!

Workshop 2: first in a series of five, short workshops for people interested in history, songwriting and /or Florence Nightingale.

In this, the first in a series of five workshops, songwriter and performer Louise Jordan takes you through the first stage of her five step songwriting process whilst exploring her work telling the story of Florence Nightingale through song.

Video 1 explores Florence Nightingale’s work on sanitary reform during the Crimean War and looks at Louise’s approach to identifying a stimulus – what to write about and who the song is for.

This video is designed for people interested in history, research, Florence Nightingale and /or songwriting. It is made possible by funding from Cambridgeshire County Council’s programme ‘The Library Presents …in your house‘.

Workshop 3: second in a series of five, short workshops for people interested in history, songwriting and /or Florence Nightingale.

In this second video, Louise questions why Florence Nightingale is depicted as a nurse, despite her decades of work as a statistician, using evidence to campaign for social reform. Alongside Florence’s story, Louise shares her approach to turning notes and research into song lyrics.

Workshop 4: third in a series of five, short workshops for people interested in history, songwriting and /or Florence Nightingale.

In this third video, Louise shares techniques for writing verses whilst exploring Florence Nightingale’s work campaigning for equal access to healthcare for all.

Workshop 5: fourth in a series of five, short workshops for people interested in history, songwriting and /or Florence Nightingale.

In this fourth video, Louise looks at methods for composing a melody, whilst exploring Florence Nightingale’s ideas about gender.

Workshop 6: fifth in a series of five, short workshops for people interested in history, songwriting and /or Florence Nightingale.

In this final video of the series, Louise looks at ideas for composing an accompaniment, whilst exploring some of Florence Nightingale’s international campaigning work.
